Live Course overview

Together, we build supportive teaching and learning environment

About

As the full-time specialist Program in Luneville and Aari embroidery, the course had been designed to provide a dynamic learning experience that connects individual creative practice with texture and design theory and technical skills based on hand embroidery. The course will inspire students to develop their careers in hand embroidery and design and make contemporary textile work using their knowledge of Luneville and Aari embroidery. The study will be held in small, friendly groups with close teacher guidance, bringing a wealth of experience, technical support, and enthusiasm to each student.

The student may explore traditional Luneville and Aari embroidery techniques within a contemporary context, and learn about the industry and the career opportunity within it. The student will also develop creative approaches to designing, drawing, and practice-based research to inform his evolving embroidery practice.  During the studies, students will be taught specific hand embroidery techniques by the trained Tutor. We will use the term ‘learning through making. The ‘making process’ refers to the creative practice: whether stitching, drawing, or developing design work for the collection. All practical units are underpinned by this methodology. The Contextual Studies units use a Material Culture methodology which connects theoretical learning to personal design work.

Study time is approximately 75% Practice and 25% Theory across each year of the course. Practice and theory are closely aligned throughout the course with the opportunity to access the Library to inform both theory and practice.

Students will have an access to a dedicated library and IT suite on-site, as well as specialist hand embroidery tools and equipment. Students will be expected to develop their hand embroidery skills from the traditional techniques through to experimental approaches to stitching, for a range of products and outcomes. Taught through a series of projects, workshops, and tutorials which are structured within each practical Unit. There will also be the opportunity to enter associated competitions and to participate in external events and exhibitions to broaden their experience within the textile world.

Hand embroidery is a specialist discipline and offers many diverse career routes for students as a graduate. These include freelance embroiderers working for the fashion and interiors market, designer-maker, craft writers, postgraduate researchers, and workshop facilitators in galleries and schools.

As a graduate, the student may apply his knowledge and experience collaborating with clients within the fashion, interiors, and gallery sectors, as well as working for the film and television industry and Haute Couture as a freelance design-makers.
